Today in History

I could not miss this date.

On May 29th, 1886, Coca-Cola’s first advertisement appeared in the Atlanta Journal on the patent medicine page. The ad :

Coca-Cola First Ad

I am a Diet Coke addict (I know, bad). Coca- Cola, created by Atlanta pharmacist Dr. John Styth Pemberton,  had humble beginnings before rising to the brand it is today.

William D’Arcy created the notable brand. D’Arcy believed that Coca-Cola’s advertising should, “Create scenes that drew people in and made them part of the pleasant interludes of everyday life.”

Coca-Cola has featured celebrity endorsers such as Bill Gates, Marilyn Monroe, Penelope Cruz, Christina Aguilera, Michelle Kwan and many more.

Below are some of my favorite Coca-Cola ads:

Summer Fashion with Lee and Birch

This past Saturday I joined some of my girlfriends and headed to a fashion show put on by a local boutique. Lee and Birch hosted, In Bloom, a fashion show showing off their summer clothing. I purchased a VIP ticket so I received an awesome swag bag. The bag included sunglasses, a scarf, earrings, bracelet and a gift certificate to local hair salon, Cheeky Strut.

When we first arrived we looked around the building and found clothes and accessories for purchase. There was also drinks and and appetizers that were delicious!

The flowers above were handmade by the owner of Lee and Birch. They were life size and couldn’t have been any cuter!

We had plenty of time before the runway show started so we grabbed a drink and met some people — while shopping of course!

I was so excited for the show to start, especially because I was front row and would be able to see the outfits up close. The models came from Matthew Agency and did an awesome job! Below are some pictures of the show.

I loved almost every outfit and it made me so excited for summer fashion! Who doesn’t love bright colors, dresses, and sandals?! Once the show was over, everyone was able to continue shopping and mingling with each other.

I would definitely recommend heading out to Lee and Birch if you are looking for cute summer outfits. They have a store in both Grand Haven and Grand Rapids.

Now it is time for me to go through my closet and decide what other key pieces I need for summer!

Duly Noted, Lee and Birch.

Dear Alison Brod PR,

I’ve followed your social media for months in the hope that a position might open with you, and it seems as though the stars have aligned this time for us in your post addressing a need for an entry-level social media executive. I squealed with excitement when I discovered this opening and have since emailed my resume, blog URL and ideas your way for consideration. However, I didn’t think that would be enough, thus…Alison Brod PR, this blog post is for you.

Now, you might be deciding between, should I get a personal protective order or keep reading? I pinkie swear, this will be painless. Furthermore, why is Duly Noted dedicating a blog post to me as a target public?

Well, Alison Brod PR, I would like to introduce you to your next Social Media Executive, me.

395483_10151339851375441_1791858248_n

My name is Megan Susterich and this is my blog. I graduate in April from Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, Michigan (GR). WAHOO!

64660-004-130F6877

I’m a Public Relations major and adore all things relating to fashion. In West Michigan that combination scarcely exists. While researching agencies to combat this problem regionally, I stumbled upon Alison Brod PR. Until this moment, the only other girl crush I’ve ever had was with Rachael Zoe; this time, I fell head-over-heels in love with Alison Brod PR. I’m smitten.

I sense that Alison Brod PR is the perfect place for my love of fashion, motivation to excel, and mad PR skills to intertwine.

  • I love pink. You love pink. My bedroom looks just like your office space. I personally believe that my life philosophy is a perfect match to the creative culture at Alison Brod PR. I knew that this was the place that I could send my pink resume and it would be appreciated.

A small glimpse into my very pink room.

A small glimpse into my very pink room.

  • I have experience working in fashion through my internship at a local high-end clothing store, Leigh’s. Here, I was responsible for Lola and Eloise. No, not employees, Leigh’s mannequins. We went on girlfriend outings regularly, hitting the town in the latest fashions, talking to ladies about sensational footwear, and bragging about accessories that would make your heart swoon. Lola and Eloise are very popular in Grand Rapids. Following our trips out, I blogged about their experiences and engaged Leigh’s shoppers, followers and lovers with all of the details of our escapades. Leigh’s coincidentally is one of the only places on the West Side of Michigan to sell Laura Mercier products, a notable client of yours. Laura Mercier’s Full Blown Volume Lash Building Mascara is a staple in my makeup bag, but I digress.

Lola, Eloise, and I loving life.

Lola, Eloise, and I loving life.

  • Currently, I serve as account associate for GrandPR, GVSU’s student run PR firm. I work closely with clients to insure the details are managed and the outcome is divine. ArtPrize is my favorite client. This is an open art competition throughout Grand Rapids. Anyone over 18 can be an artist and put their artwork virtually anywhere within the city. Proximity to this concentration of art in many forms has increased my appreciation for how art influences fashion. I see from your website, you use art to predict next season’s trends and designing other PR pieces-AWESOME!
  • Because I cannot get enough PR, I also work as a public relations associate with 834 Design & Marketing. Through this experience I have learned more in a semester of “doing” than I have in my course studies. It has been unreal! This non-traditional agency run by women has set me up for success. Going so far as to aid my best friend Allison Supron and me in beginning our own mini business for consulting. We have our first client already and will be working on aspects of design, public relations, event coordination, and social media.

For these reasons mentioned above, and many more I would love to share with you, I feel that I would make the perfect teammate and social media executive at Alison Brod PR. I’d like to think that fate has a way of making connections behind the scenes and I’m hoping to give my destiny a boost with this post. I hope to speak with you soon.

Duly Noted, Alison Brod PR.

Beyonce’s PR Scheme

SURPRISE! Beyoncé now has a H&M campaign (rumor has it that the first time she wore H&M was when the photo shoot took place–DUH).

Beyonce just lounging around in H&M

Beyoncé just lounging around in H&M clothing

Now, don’t get me wrong, I LOVE Beyoncé. If I could be anyone besides myself, I would want to be either Beyoncé or Kate Middleton, both royalty in their own right. BUT, has anyone else noticed how she just cleverly jumped right back into the spotlight after having a baby?! No? Then let me create this timeline for you.

January 21st, 2013– Beyoncé sings the National Anthem during the Inauguration. In case you don’t care about those things (help yourself) I included a video below.

January 22, 2013- People are already speculating that Beyoncé lip synced the National Anthem. GASP!

January 31, 2013– Beyoncé addresses claims that she lip synced, but not before making everyone stand and singing it in “real-time” before anyone could ask questions. Take that. In case you missed that as well, a video is below.

As if that was not enough, Beyoncé also announces that she will be the performing at the Super Bowl

February 3rd, 2013– Beyoncé performs at the Super Bowl WITH the other members of Destiny’s Child. That definitely got some attention due to the fact that the group had not sang together in quite some time. Performance below:

Then the power goes out and she is blamed for that. Can a girl catch a break?

February 4, 2013– After a rockin’ performance that everyone was talking about, she wasted no time announcing dates for a World Tour! Of course everyone was so excited because who wouldn’t want to go and see someone who just nailed a usually horrible Super Bowl Halftime!?

February 5,2013– As if lip syncing at the inauguration, performing flawlessly at the Super Bowl, AND announcing a world tour was not enough, Beyoncé’s publicist wanted a few minutes of fame as well. When some unflattering pictures of Beyoncé emerged, Yvette, her publicist, wasted no time trying to get them taken down.

If this is the worst Beyonce has ever looked, she lives a very blessed life!

If this is the worst Beyoncé has ever looked, she lives a very blessed life!

Yvette's email requesting pictures be removed.

Yvette’s email requesting pictures be removed.

February 16, 2013– HBO airs Beyonce’s personal documentary “Life is But a Dream”. The documentary shows parts of her private life and raw video of her flashy performances. Perfect timing to see a glimpse into her life before you buy tickets for her tour!

And now after all of that, Beyoncé has an H&M campaign. Sounds like this may have been a little PR scheme (a VERY brilliant one) to me. What do you think?

Not the Yoga Pants!

As many of you probably know, Lululemon had to recall their luon pants because they were too sheer. Does this have anything to do with women not wearing their proper size?! Either way, that particular item makes up 17 percent of all women’s bottoms sold at Lululemon.

00120065-0000-0000-0000-000000000000_469b5687-f4ab-4992-a2ac-46c322b7a161_20130319133432_Lululemon_031913_RF_300

According to Lululemon, the blame is on their manufacturer in Taiwan.

Lululemon said in a blog post, “We are working with our supplier to replace this fabric and other manufacturers to replenish the affected core items as fast as we can.”

That is where things get interesting. According to the manufacturer, Eclat Textile Company, Lululemon approved the shipment of pants that were later recalled. The CEO also claims that Lululemon has not contacted them.

Looks to me like someone is trying to cover something up. The way that this unfolds will be interesting to watch in the next few days. Lululemon has become so popular due to the quality of their products and now they have a recall due to the quality! Now what?!

In my opinion, Lululemon needs to own up to the fact that something went wrong (we can’t always be perfect!) and address how they will fix it. I know that they were quoted saying they are working with others to fix the fabric and to get the pants back on the market as fast as they can – but how much can you trust when you are not even sure who is to blame?!

Next, Lululemon needs to reach out to Eclat Textile Company and get on the same page. There is obviously a gap in communication. If they want this to blow over, they need to be releasing the same information.

I personally do not think this will affect their sales that greatly. They are a great company with many different yoga pants that consumers can pick from aside from the recalled pant. If they really want to come back strong, they could always release more information about the material used and maybe even the process. Hey, they could even put a humorous spin on this (not that there really needs to be more of one!) and create a “sheer test”. Consumers can know just how sheer the pants are before they purchase them.

I just want everyone to be able to Down Dog with peace of mind!

What do you think about the Lululemon recall? What do you want to see Lululemon do?

Duly Noted, sheer yoga pants.

Fashion with Rebecca Wierda

Last year I had a great opportunity to intern with Leigh’s, an upscale women’s clothing store. I was in charge of their two mannequins Lola and Eloise. I took them around Grand Rapids to show off the latest fashions to those in the community. Once they had the time of their lives out on the town, I would blog about their experiences. I had blast working there and love that they provide Grand Rapids with the best fashions straight from designers.

Because I love Leigh’s so much, I wanted to interview the President/CEO, Rebecca Wierda. She spends her time going to NYFW to check out the season’s hottest trends while helping dress some of the fashionable women of Grand Rapids. I knew that this could really inspire some fashionable ladies living in cities with a smaller fashion influence!

1. Tell me a little about Leigh’s

Leigh’s is a 13,000 square foot upscale women’s specialty store that provides the best in apparel, shoes, accessories and cosmetics.

Leigh's

Leigh’s

2. How did you get into the fashion “world”?

I have always loved fashion, but it was when my husband and his business partner purchased Leigh’s that I submerged myself in the business world of fashion!

3. What do you believe is the biggest misconception of the industry?

People sometimes think, “How hard could it be?”  It is hard work!  We are experts in fashion which means we study fashion trends and are always looking for the very best the market has to offer.  But selecting the fashion is just the start of the process there is so much that goes into being a successful merchant.

4. What is your favorite part of working in fashion?

Fashion is fun! Everyday I walk through the store, I am surrounded by beautiful apparel!  It’s also a great feeling to know that women come to us to assist them in enhancing their individual style.

5. What does a typical day look like for you?

I am always on task!  Whether it’s meeting with our merchandise manager to review our upcoming buys or our inventory levels, working on our marketing, interacting with our customers, or steaming new arrivals, Leigh’s is a small business, so you do whatever needs to be done.  Every day is different!

6. What have you learned working in fashion?

It takes a team!  I have the best team at Leigh’s and each person has an area of expertise.  Together, we bring the best fashion to West Michigan and deliver an exceptional customer experience.

7. What do you believe are 3 items every women should have in her closet?

A great LBD (little black dress).  It is so versatile, you can get so many different looks with a LBD all based on how you accessorize it!

A great fitting pair of jeans that are on trend.  This is a must have staple for you to pair back novelty sweaters, tops and jackets.

A neutral go-to shoe.  In the summer, I love a nude color shoe and in the fall and winter, you must have a great black shoe.

8. Who are your favorite designers?

There are so many designers that I love! I love variety in my closet, so I don’t think I could come up with just one.  Each designer is unique and has something special that makes you drawn to their clothing.  For example, Etro has the most amazing prints and Pamella Roland makes the most glamorous gowns….how could I ever chose between the two?!?

9. What advice do you have for someone trying to break into the industry?

Take the time to do an internship or seek people out in the industry.  There are so many different facets to our industry and really zero in on what you have the most interest in and what matches up best with your skill set.

If you are ever in the Grand Rapids area, you MUST check out Leigh’s! Sometimes the designers are even in the store!

What to Wear on a Rainy Day

It is now almost time for rainy weather. I don’t mind the rain because it is not snow and means warm weather is coming soon! The only issue is, I hate being wet. No one wants their hair messed up, let alone your shoes! I came up with a few tips to help you dress to impress on a rainy day.

1. Rain boots/Wellies. This is a must. With puddles everywhere, your shoes are bound to get soaked. Be sure to purchase a good pair of wellies and pack your nice work shoes in your bag. You can always change once you get to work, class, anywhere. And as long as you are wearing them, purchase them in a fun color like the ones below to brighten up your mood on a dreary day.

Lavender Hunter Boots

Lavender Hunter Boots

2. A good umbrella. I know you are probably saying ‘Duh’ but the quality of the umbrella is something to really think about. There have been many times that I have been walking in wind and rain and my umbrella blows back and I am left soaking wet. Check and see how strong your umbrella is before you purchase it. A bubble umbrella is a great way to prevent a “flip” and it also keeps you ultra dry!

3. Tailor your pants or change your outfit. Nothing is worse than wet pants. If you cannot wear rain boots, be sure to have your pants hemmed to fit you perfectly and to prevent dragging. Otherwise, try and wear something that can easily tuck into rain boots. Tights are a great option.

4. Protect your hair. Raincoats with hoods are the best way to do this. There are many options and this will prevent your hair from being TOTALLY ruined by rain. Of course, it is almost impossible to have a good hair day on a rainy day.

I hope this helps those who are experiencing some rain! What do you do to protect yourself from rain?

I will leave you with Audrey Hepburn looking chic in rain. If only it was this easy.

TGIF

Even though I am currently on Spring Break, I still love Fridays. They make me happy and excited. For something a little different, I decided to post some other things that make me happy and excited! Enjoy

Fashion PR with Hello Perfect

I was lucky enough to touch base with Angela Ribbler from the blog Hello Perfect. Angela and her friend Alexa Carlin started the inspirational fashion blog to show others that the challenge in life is not to become perfect, but to accept who you are. Learn more about their blog here!

Alexa and Angela from Hello Perfect!

Alexa and Angela from Hello Perfect!

I found out about their blog through my good friend Allison Supron. She is an awesome graphic designer (check out her work here) and had the opportunity to do an internship with them. When I heard about their blog, I read more about them and was already feeling inspired and knew I need to feature them on DulyNotedPR!

After talking back and forth, I got some great questions answered and fell even more in love with the concept of Hello Perfect!

When and why did you start blogging?

We started blogging in June 2012 because it we saw it as an effective way to get our message out to the world. Through Hello Perfect we want to advocate that the challenge in life is not to become perfect, it’s accepting that you already are. We want to create a community of people who understand and also advocate this message and we felt that creating a blog platform was the best way to do that.

What is your biggest piece of advice for those who are just about to graduate and start searching for jobs?

Do what you need to do to make a living but never lose sight of your dream. A lot of people graduate school, find a job that helps them pay for rent and food, but leaves them feeling empty and unfulfilled. Life is about taking the years you have on Earth and filling them with as many experiences as possible that leave you feeling happy and hopefully making an impact on the world. Don’t forget that with every job choice you make, it should be bringing you closer to your ultimate dream.

What is your experience (interns, jobs, etc.) in the PR field? What have you learned through your PR experiences that you wish you could’ve told yourself when you first started?

I have interned for many different small firms throughout college, including a nonprofit doing graphic design work and a social media marketing agency, but my most fulfilling internship was this past summer for the fashion PR firm D&E Marketing Group because, not only did I learn a lot about working in the field of fashion public relations, I created invaluable relationships which I know will help me succeed professionally in the future. I don’t wish I could have told myself anything when I first started because I think the best learning comes from experience and I don’t think I would have learned as much as I have if I had been told what to expect rather than to just learn as I go.

What do you believe is the biggest misconception of Fashion PR?

I think the biggest misconception is probably that it is a glamorous job and that everyone who works in fashion pr has a life like Samantha Jones from Sex and the City. It’s a lot of dirty work – steaming clothes, running errands, spending hours and hours tying ribbons on gift boxes to make sure each one is identical, etc. There is a lot of talking on the phone and sitting behind a computer. It’s not all runways, fashion shows and free designer clothes.

What is the best thing about working in Fashion PR?

My favorite thing about fashion PR is that it gives you the power to really create a brand’s image. The majority of what makes a brand’s image comes from the brains behind the brand’s PR campaigns and I think that’s a really cool part of PR that most people don’t realize.

What have been the benefits of starting Hello Perfect and blogging in general?

The benefits for me of starting Hello Perfect are endless!!! Some of my favorite parts are that I am able to make a difference in others’ lives by inspiring them with my thoughts, ideas and perceptions, I am able to work side by side with my best friend and partner in crime, and that I get to do something I love every day, which leaves me more fulfilled and satisfied than I could have ever have imagined in a career. It’s more than just a job or a company to us. It’s our baby that we are able to nurture and grow and, the best part is, the places we could go with Hello Perfect are limitless.

What are three items every women should have in their closet?

Something that makes her feel sexy, something that she can be comfortable in, and something that makes her feel like she can take on the world!

Why do you love fashion?

That it allows people to say what they want to the world about how they feel about themselves. It’s a mode of self expression and no matter what anyone may try to say, there is no “perfect” way to express yourself through fashion – it’s completely individual and unique.

Where are your favorite places to shop?

Markets in London, specifically Camden Market. It has everything!!

Where do you two see yourselves in five years?

In five years, we will both be living in New York City running Hello Perfect from our office full-time and continuing to grow our Hello Perfect community. We envision doing this through public speaking and networking events which will be inspirational, informative and allow people to connect and encourage each other to accomplish their dreams.

Thank you so much to Angela and Alexa for answering this questions! I wish the best for Hello Perfect!

Duly Noted, Hello Perfect.

Shopping like a Duchess

One of the people I look up to the most is Kate Middleton. Aside from loving her style, I love how posed she is. To me, she is the definition of a true lady.

Duke and Duchess of Cambridge 1st wedding anniversary

Well, as many people have come to find out, you can shop like the duchess. She is known for re-wearing (gasp!) and buying low-cost options that even most commoners can afford. Kate has been known to shut down websites and guarantee a sell-out of your product.

That is exactly what happened just this past week. Kate was apparently shopping at Topshop where she snatched this dress:

duchess-dress_2500118a-300x436

The elastic waistband is perfect for her ever-growing baby bump, but it is also a dress option that she can wear post baby.

Once the news hit about her purchase, Topshop’s website crashed and at one point they were selling one dress per minute! They released a statement saying that they are taking pre-orders for the dress and plan to be releasing more next week.

This is a good warning to all fashion companies. If word breaks of the duchess purchasing one of your products, be sure you can handle the soon-to-be swarm of customers. It might just shut down your whole website!

What pieces of Kate Middleton’s wardrobe would you love to have in your closet?

Duly Noted, Kate Middleton.
